Current Category Water Lilies > Hardy Lilies Hardy Water Lilies “HARDY” by name and hardy by nature. They can tolerate extremes in temperature, even live under ice in winter and return to their full glory in spring. Lilies like sun. More sun means better growth and more flowers. Some flower in partial shade but all do better in full sunlight. Growing lilies in pots is preferable to planting into the bottom of the pond. Potting allows easy removal for subdivision and re-potting into new growing medium with fertilizer which ensures vigorous growth next season. Any pot into which the lily will sensibly fit may be used, however due to their vigorous growth the pot should allow for at least a doubling of size in a season. We sell a specialised pond planter basket designed especially for lilies. Lilies grow in sand, soil or clay. A heavy clay based soil is best, especially if enriched with one or two fertilizer tablets. Old cow manure is also good mixed at one part manure to three parts soil. Alternate types of fertilizer may be used, e.g. two tablespoons of slow release fertilizer or half a cup of blood and bone, mixed well throughout the soil. Placing a layer of fine gravel or sand on top of the soil in the pot can be useful to reduce dirtying the water in your pond and also to discourage fish from ‘gardening’. In either case the tip of the rhizome must show above the planting medium. Always water well before placing the pot in the pond to reduce soiling of the pond water. All plants are supplied bare rooted ie. unpotted -in sealed and labelled bags
